Beadles

The role of a Livery Company Beadle is most often a ceremonial one these days, making announcements at events and carrying the Company’s staff whilst leading the procession during Dinners, Banquets, church services and other events.

However, another key facet (although usually less needed today) is that of disciplinarian. Be it a young Journeyman, or a lively guest, the Beadle would, as needed, quietly counsel the individual regarding their behaviour, dress or tardiness, thereby maintaining the good reputation of the Company. Often the tone of an event is set by the Beadle, be it via greeting everyone, announcing guests or liaising with the Clerk and catering staff during an event, they will be equally at home speaking with the King, or the youngest Journeyman.

Beadles of Worshipful Company of Fruiterers

The office of the Beadle existed in all probability many years prior to the first entry recorded in 1711, but due to the loss of the Company’s books in an unfortunate fire at the Clerk’s House in 1748, there is no earlier record.
